The Norm Steenstra Award
The Norm Steenstra Spirit Award was created to honor the life and legacy of Norman “Norm” Steenstra Jr. (March 9, 1951 – January 16, 2024), a pioneering advocate for environmental justice, grassroots organizing, and public accountability in West Virginia.
Norm dedicated his life to protecting our state’s land, water, and people. As a founder of the West Virginia Environmental Council and longtime director of the West Virginia Citizen Action Group, he worked tirelessly to give power back to communities and push for policies that served the public good. His leadership helped shape some of the most important environmental and civic reforms in our state’s history.
This annual award recognizes individuals whose work reflects Norm’s spirit: bold, compassionate, community-centered, and committed to lasting change. Whether through organizing, advocacy, education, or innovation, nominees should demonstrate a clear dedication to justice, sustainability, and uplifting others.
If your passion aligns with Norm’s vision—or if you know someone whose efforts carry his torch—we invite you to apply or nominate a deserving changemaker.
Together, we continue his work and carry his spirit forward.
